UK Student Visas

Most international students need a visa to study in the UK. The main route is the UK Student visa (which replaced the Tier 4 visa). This guide explains the essentials of how it works. Visa fees, financial requirements and rules change regularly, so always confirm the latest details on the official gov.uk website before you apply.

Who needs a UK Student visa?

Students from outside the UK and Ireland who are aged 16 or over and want to study at a licensed institution usually need a Student visa. Children aged 4–17 attending an independent school may apply for a Child Student visa instead.

Short courses of up to six months may sometimes be possible on a visitor route, but you cannot study long-term programmes that way.

What you need to apply

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your licensed UK school, college or university — this is issued once you have an offer and have met the conditions.

Evidence that you can meet the financial requirement (tuition fees plus living costs for a set period), and proof of your English-language ability where required.

A valid passport, and for many applicants, a tuberculosis test certificate depending on your country.

The application process

You normally apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, and then provide your biometric information at a visa application centre. Decisions often take a few weeks, but processing times vary by country and time of year.

Apply early — ideally as soon as you have your CAS — to allow time for your visa to be processed before your course starts.

After you arrive

Keep your visa documents safe, register with your institution, and follow the conditions of your visa, including any limits on working hours. Your school or university's international office can help with questions once you are in the UK.
